Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Staff Services Manager I, the Crime Analyst (CA) III in the Record Challenge Section within Record Quality Services Program works independently, or with other staff, handles the most complex claims of inaccurate and/or incomplete criminal histories and requests for administrative adjudication pursuant to California Penal Code § 11120-11127. Consults with individuals who seek information pertaining to their own criminal history records, the CA III ensures that legal requirements are met, identifies, and analyzes relevant criminal records and source documentation to determine whether a challenge is substantiated or denied based upon any findings of material inaccuracy or incompleteness. The incumbent must possess extensive knowledge of the criminal justice system, its complexities, and its processes. The CA III must also possess an extensive knowledge of the statutory code sections relevant to criminal history record reviews, automated criminal history records, and related programs within the Department of Justice (DOJ). The CA III also represents DOJ in court and at administrative hearings, not only to define how criminal history information is received and added to a state summary criminal history record, but to support the actions taken by DOJ to ensure the criminal history record accurately reflects the criminal history information received by DOJ.  The CA III works independently with DOJ legal counsel in consultation and preparation for administrative hearings and may act as lead to assist program management with department-wide projects, training, and legislative review.

Working Conditions

This position is designated for telework under Government Code section 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California and may require reporting to headquarters or field offices and facilities to fulfill operational needs. All telework schedules are subject to change and may be reevaluated at any time. Telework does not change the terms and conditions of employment, the essential functions of job duties, or required compliance with the Department of Justice policies.

This position is eligible for telework, and will be required to report to the office as needed/required. The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality on sensitive issues, work cooperatively as a team, and maintain professional relationships with department staff.
  • Ability to train other staff.
  • Ability to give and receive feedback
  • Ability to communicate concisely DOJ's policies in administrative or court hearings
