I. Job Title: Medical Billing and Coding
Location: United Community Corporation (UCC) – Newark, NJ
Employment Type: Full-time | On-site

II. About United Community Corporation:
UCC is a Newark-based nonprofit Community Action Agency dedicated to empowering low-income residents through direct services that promote stability, health, and self-sufficiency. Our programs include emergency shelter, medical respite, youth development, workforce training, and housing assistance. The Medical Billing and Coder is a key part of our compliance and finance operations, supporting accurate documentation and reimbursement for critical services provided to the community.

III. Medical Coder Job Responsibilities:
  • Code and abstract client records across UCC’s Medical Respite, Emergency Shelter, Food Pantry, Health Navigation, and other service programs.
  • Ensure medical and service documentation is accurate and meets billing and reporting requirements for Medicaid, Medicare, and grant-funded services.
  • Audit case files and clinical records to identify coding errors, documentation gaps, or billing discrepancies.
  • Work with staff and supervisors to ensure proper documentation for all reimbursable services.
  • Assist the Director of Finance with the preparation of internal reports, billing submissions, and compliance audits.
  • Stay current on coding standards and regulatory updates; serve as a resource to program staff.
  • Support training efforts for case managers and service providers on documentation practices.


IV. Work Hours, Compensation & Benefits:

  • Monday through Friday, standard business hours (on-site only)
  • Salary range: $25 – $30 per hour, depending on experience

V. Qualifications/Skills:

  • Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Detail-oriented, with strong record review and documentation skills.
  • Ability to collaborate with program and finance staff.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and EHR/data entry systems.
  • Maintains confidentiality and ensures HIPAA compliance.


VI. Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Medical coding certification (CPC, CCS, or equivalent) preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience in medical coding, billing, or compliance required
  • Experience with nonprofit or human services agencies preferred
